The Loft Works: The Art of Nautical Sails

My modern nautical artworks are rooted in observation, not imagination. Working from real sail forms, I've distilled structure, geometry and colour into graphic compositions designed for contemporary spaces. These are pieces made to live quietly within an interior — considered, balanced and intentionally minimal.

  • Observation Over Imagination

Each piece begins with time spent studying real working sails — their seams, curves, tension lines and wear. Rather than inventing forms, I work from what’s physically present, using observation to understand how sail structures behave before reducing them into graphic compositions.

  • Reduction Into Form

Complex shapes and layered materials are stripped back to essential structure, proportion and rhythm. This process of reduction creates clarity and balance, allowing the work to retain a strong graphic presence without becoming decorative or illustrative.

  • Designed for Considered Spaces

The finished works are intended to sit within contemporary interiors — calm, architectural pieces that support a space rather than compete with it. They are designed to reward closer looking, revealing detail and structure over time.

Series 1

This is a collection of limited-edition 2 colour digital artworks (1-17) inspired by the mainsails of the Fowey River Dinghies — these are focused on geometry, colour, and structure. Each piece is created using digital tools, giving a clean, defined aesthetic unique to this medium. These can be purchased either as high-quality individually signed and numbered fine art prints or digital only files.

Whether you love sailing culture, abstract geometry, or crisp modern art, this collection celebrates shape and colour through a digital lens — anchoring the spirit of the sea into visual form.
